The term "Gap" in trumpets refers to the small space between the end of the mouthpiece and the beginning of the lead pipe inside the mouthpiece receiver. This distance may be minimal, but it has a significant impact on the playing feel, response, and sound of the trumpet.

A larger or smaller Gap affects airflow and resistance within the instrument:

• Larger Gap: Increases resistance, often resulting in more stable tone control but may require more effort to play.
• Smaller Gap: Reduces resistance and can improve response but may sometimes result in less stability in tone control, especially in higher ranges.
