Why Trumpets with a Curved (Banana) Bell?
They offer more direct sound projection upwards or to the side
– useful for on-stage monitoring or when the sound shouldn’t go
directly toward the audience.
The sound is slightly softer and more diffuse – depending on
the curve, the way sound travels through the instrument changes,
which affects the overtone spectrum.
Dizzy Gillespie famously
played a trumpet with an upward-bent bell (around a 45° angle).
Originally the result of an accident, he loved the sound so much
that he kept it – and made it his signature.
